The name of both its parts, Ain el-Asad and al-Chmais, is Arabic. Near Ain el-Asad are caves and a well with bronze-age finds; in the Chmais area are rock-cut water wells, two sarcophagi carved into a smooth rock on the east side, and the remains of an olive press in the village center.
Ain el-Asad wal-Chmais, in the qada of Chouf, is a Maronite village that suffered destruction and displacement during the Lebanese civil war and was among the villages benefiting from the return-and-compensation plan before 27 July 1998. Its mar Jirjis church and mixed public primary school were both destroyed during the events.
