Name & origin

Freiha held the name to be an ancient Phoenician word meaning 'the blessed', a fitting name for an abundant spring. Habiqa and Armala read it as Syriac from the verb 'barak' meaning 'crouching/resting'. Folk tradition links it to 'birk al-jamal' (where camels knelt to rest as caravans passed). The author considers the Phoenician reading 'the blessed' the most plausible.

History

Mount Barouk peaks at 1,943 m and the town has long been associated with the Nabeh el-Barouk spring at its base. Barouk is the birthplace of the poet Rachid Nakhle, author of the Lebanese national anthem.
