Jdeideh El Chouf is a town in the Chouf District of Mount Lebanon at about 750 m above sea level roughly 53 km from Beirut. Local agriculture includes fruit trees and grapevines.
El Jdeideh, a name borne by many Lebanese villages, is an Arabic alteration (not a diminutive) of 'al-jadida' (the new). It is thought to have been so named to distinguish it from Boqaata, of which it still forms a part; the name Boqaata is Syriac, meaning 'a flat plain'.
Jdeideh el-Chouf is watered by the course of the Barouk river, and its bridge — built in the time of the mutasarrif Wassa Pasha — carries the road linking Moukhtara to Beiteddine. Boqaata, whose Syriac name means flat open ground, still forms part of the town, and the name Jdeideh is thought to have been given to tell the two apart. No ancient remains have been recorded on its land.
