About Khraybeh

Khraybeh is a Chouf-area locality in Mount Lebanon.

Name & origin

The town's name carries the same discussion as the other Khraibeh entries (Freiha traces it to Syriac for 'house of help and aid'). In Khraibeh stands an ancient oak nicknamed 'Umm Sharatit' that locals venerate, hanging on it strips of cloth from vowed children's clothes; on the western edge are rock-cut sarcophagi, one bearing the carving of an eagle, traditionally dated to Roman times though not scientifically confirmed.

History

Rock-cut sarcophagi on Khraibeh's western edge, one bearing the carving of an eagle, are traditionally dated to Roman times, while the nearby site of Mashqir appears in Crusader archives of 1261 and served as a farm of Khraibeh and Baadaran between 1533 and 1570, yielding Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman and Mamluk sherds. By Law No. 532 of 24 July 1996, the town's communal lands were included in the Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve.
