About Dahr El Maghara

Dahr El Maghara is a small Lebanese Christian village that is located 33°41′N 35°27′E, about 20 km south of Beirut in the Chouf region of Mount Lebanon.

Name & origin

The village sits above a large cave on the northern bank of Wadi Baasir known as 'the Jiyeh cave', so its name and description came from its geographic position (Dahr el-Maghara, 'the back/ridge of the cave'). Its remains include walls, sarcophagi, basins and rock-cut troughs attributed by researchers to the Roman era.

History

Dahr el-Maghara stands on a group of green hills looking out over Beirut and the Damour plain to the west and north-west, and over Sidon to the south-west. Its people were displaced during the recent conflict and returned in the 1990s with help from a local foundation, before the displaced received their compensation.
