Named after the Damour River, known to the ancients as Tamyras/Damuras. Anis Freiha traced it to a Phoenician root meaning 'to marvel' (the wondrous one), perhaps an epithet of a river-god; Greek sources render it Tamuras.
Damour was a Phoenician town built on both banks of the Damour River, and retains a Roman road from Constantine's era and Crusader watchtowers along the shore. One of the first Chouf towns overrun in the 1976 displacement, it was largely destroyed and its people scattered; gradual return and reconstruction followed the Taif Agreement. In 2011 its main square was named after Patriarch Sfeir.
