Deir Dourit is a town in the Chouf District of Mount Lebanon at about 650 m above sea level roughly 45 km from Beirut.
The second part of the name is thought to be Aramaic meaning 'the round one,' giving 'the round house.' Frēha considered it a corruption of a Syriac phrase meaning 'monastery of the nuns,' while Habiqa and Armala read it as Syriac for 'monastery of the thorn.' Popular tradition says a Lebanese woman in America named 'Dorit' built here, and the place took her name.
Deir Dourit's people were displaced during the civil war of the late twentieth century, and the village was among those covered by the return-and-compensation programme that followed. Its territory is counted together with neighbouring Bkerzay, a name read as Syriac for a place of preaching.
