A shepherd came and killed many of the wolves there, so he was nicknamed Abu Diab ('father of wolves'); he built a house, married, and his descendants carried the surname Abu Diab, a family that still lives in the town. He gave the place this name, since before that it was unknown, i.e. 'unknown / ignorant' (jahiliyya).
