Fariha traced the name Jbaa to Aramaic meaning 'the mountain, hill and plateau'. The name Jbaa appears twice in the Hebrew Bible (Joshua and Judges). Its associated locality Jabal Tura carries the same meaning, 'tura' meaning mountain, as Jbaa means 'mountain and hill'.
Inhabited since the Bronze Age, Jbaa sits at the top of the Barouk–Niha mountain at about 1,200 m, overlooking Baadaran, the Jeblay valley and Marj Bisri, and an archaeological site of more than a hectare on the old route through Wadi al-Maabour toward Jeblay, Marj Bisri and Saida holds successive periods of settlement, the oldest from the Middle Bronze Age (2000–1550 BC). Law No. 532 of 24 July 1996 declared the village's communal lands part of the Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve.
