Kfarniss is a town in the Chouf District of Mount Lebanon at about 300 m above sea level roughly 20 km from Beirut. Its land covers about 2.88 km², local agriculture includes vegetables.
The author holds the name is Aramaic meaning 'village of refuge'; others interpret it as 'village of the banner.' Old ruins on one of Kfarniss's hills surround a large structure residents call El-Burj. Historians hold it must have been one of a chain of towers set on summits — those of Barouk, Mtein Aabey and Dahr el-Baidar among them — running north as far as Akkar and Damascus, south into Palestine and east to Baalbek. Jewellery of the Canaanite period and floor paving from what was most likely a Roman house have been found on the same ground.

The remains of a large building among old ruins on one of the town’s hills, which residents call the tower. Readings of its date differ between Phoenician and one of the fortresses used by the Marada; older residents recall a tunnel of about a hundred metres running from it to a spring on the town’s outlying land.
Building remains above Ain Trabin whose floors were paved with small square tiles a few centimetres across — a sign of the means of those who lived there, and most likely Roman. Jewellery of the Canaanite period has also been found in the locality.
A relatively wide old road running about two kilometres north-east from El-Burj along the Safa river, ending at the remains of a settlement known as Harf Louza.
