Its subdistricts also carry Aramaic/Syriac names: Bou Dine ('place of the rods'), Bir Snin ('the pure son'), Deir al-Chir (from a Syriac root for roundness) and Chouit ('the levelled, smoothed land').
Majd el-Maouch, in the qada of Chouf, comprises the districts of Bou Dine, Bir Snin, Deir al-Chir and Chouit, and its name is a Syriac phrase meaning 'watchtower of the forest'. Its inhabitants were displaced during the events of the 1980s but were among the first Chouf returnees in the early 1990s. Its religious heritage is tied to the Maronite Patriarch Douaihy, who built the church of St George the Martyr there, and to the monastery of Mar Maroun Bir Snin.
