Bsaba (Bsaba el-Chouf) sits in Iqlim el-Kharroub, roughly 51 km from Beirut via the Wadi ez-Zeina junction, or via Damour–Beit Eddine–Ghrayfeh. Its land covers about 4 km², with olives as the principal traditional crop, followed by grapevines, figs and wheat. Several thousand residents are registered. The town is distinct from the village of the same name in the Baabda District.
Scholars agree the name Bsaba derives from Syriac for 'house of the elder, the aged sheikh, the chief.' Saba is also the name of a saint, and the town has several shrines to unknown holy men including the 'Prophet Saba' shrine to which the town's name is attributed.
Researchers concur that the name Bsaba comes from the Syriac Beit Saba — "the home of the elder, the sheikh." Saba is also the name of a saint, and the town preserves the shrine "Maqam an-Nabi Saba" (the Prophet Saba) whose exact dating is unknown but to whom the village name is clearly linked. Mar Saba the monk (439–532 CE) lived in Palestine under St Euthymius and founded the monastery still bearing his name near Jerusalem; whether the local figure is the same saint is unclear.
