Researchers agree its name comes from the Syriac Beit Saba, 'the home of the elder', and the town keeps the Maqam an-Nabi Saba shrine to which the name is linked; olives are its principal crop, followed by grapevines, figs and wheat, and its municipal council was established in 1952.
