Hasrout is a town in the Chouf District of Mount Lebanon at about 800 m above sea level roughly 45 km from Beirut.
Fariha considered the name Hasrout to be the feminine plural of the Phoenician word 'hasr', meaning to enclose, fortify and wall in; so Hasrout means 'protected/guarded places'. A similar name appears repeatedly in the Hebrew Bible.
Hasrout's old site was on a small hill on the southern side of the town, called by locals 'Burj al-Hosn', now covered by modern houses; its monuments include large stones arranged as a wall, thought to be foundations of an ancient building, perhaps the fortress to which the town is attributed. Excavations uncovered pottery and bronze artifacts, and the surrounding hills hold rock-cut tombs from the Bronze Age. About a third of its people are Catholic Christians; they were displaced during the civil war of the 1980s, and the Nabil al-Bustani Foundation later funded their return, with the Ministry of the Displaced paying compensation.

Hasrout itself is not a member of that union; it sits just beyond its eastern boundary, in the more mountainous part of the district.
