About Deir Koucheh

Deir Koucheh is a town in the Chouf District of Mount Lebanon.

Name & origin

In Syriac the first element means a monastery of monks and hermits, while the second is interpreted by Hbeika and Armala as 'Abyssinian' (from a root meaning Abyssinia), so some explained the name as 'Monastery of the Abyssinian'. One modern researcher traced the word to French 'cache', i.e. a Crusader-era 'hideout'. No remains of any monastery or old building have yet been identified to settle the matter.

History

The name Deir Koucheh points to a monastery — readings run from a Syriac word for monks and hermits, to "the Abyssinian’s monastery", to a French derivation left from the Crusader period. No trace of any monastery or early building has been found in the village, so the reading cannot be settled.
