About Kfarqatra

Name & origin

In Syriac the name means, according to Fariha, 'the village of the covenant or contract'. The associated locality Kfarhammal derives from a Syriac word meaning 'granaries of grain' (its name was written Kfarhammal); the name Bsenneh is likely Syriac from elements meaning 'a protected or walled place', and al-Duwair derives from an Aramaic-Syriac root meaning roundness, 'the round locality'.

History

Archaeological remains of various kinds, dating to ancient Semitic periods, have been found in the area of Kfarqatra and its surroundings. Its Christians were subjected to displacement during the events of the 1980s; their return after the reconciliations has been only partial and impermanent, for economic reasons tied to the lack of livelihood after farming declined in the town.
