About Joun

Name & origin

Researchers agree the name Joun derives from Aramaic meaning 'a corner/angle'. Its lands hold antiquities back to the Stone Age and remains linked to the Phoenician temple of Eshmun near the Awali river, as well as rock-cut sarcophagi thousands of years old.

History

Joun is where Lady Hester Stanhope spent her last years. She rented an abandoned monastery on one of the village hilltops and turned it into her residence; the property now belongs to the Holy Saviour Monastery. That monastery — Deir el-Mokhalles, the mother house of the Greek Catholic Salvatorian Order — stands on Joun’s land. Antiquities found across the village run from the Stone Age to remains treated as an extension of the Phoenician temple of Eshmun by the Awali river.
